授業体験＆ボートニックプレビューコンサート ～Class Experience & Botanic Preview Concert～

5/21。午前中は、グランツパス高校の授業に参加したり、見学したり…。もちろん言語は英語なので100％理解することは難しかったですが、アメリカの高校生も日本の高校生も、真面目に授業を受けているのは同じなのだと実感しました♪ 写真にもありますが、楽器を演奏しているのは部活動ではなく、音楽の授業。アメリカでは、音楽の授業で吹奏楽やマーチング、ジャズやオーケストラなど自分自身が希望する授業を受けることができます。普段、放課後に部活動として活動している私たちから考えるととても新鮮な環境でした。もちろん、私たちと交流している吹奏楽やジャズバンド、マーチングバンドのメンバーはこの授業で組まれていることになります♪

In the morning, we joined and observed classes at Grants Pass High School. Since everything was in English, it was hard to understand 100%, but we realized that American high school students, just like Japanese students, take their classes seriously♪
As you can see in the photos, the students playing instruments were not doing club activities—it was part of their music class. In the U.S., students can choose the type of music class they want, such as concert band, marching band, jazz band, or orchestra.
For us, who usually take part in these activities as after-school clubs, this system felt very new and interesting. Of course, the students we’ve been interacting with in band, jazz, and marching are all classmates in these music classes♪
午後には、本日も学習時間を設けました。各自、自分自身のメニューに取り組んでいました。
夜7時からは、5/24に開催されるボートニックパレードに出演するミドルスクールの生徒の皆さんとグランツパス高校の皆さん、そして、私たち慶誠高校吹奏楽部でのプレビューコンサートが開催されました。そのために、校舎の中庭でウォーミングアップをして、保護者会が準備してくださったピザを頂きました。
このイベントは、私たちがお世話になっているルイス先生が企画されたもので、地元の若い学生の絆を深めるために計画をされたとのこと…そこに、日本から来た私たちを加えて頂いたことに、心から感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。
本番では、各校がボートニックパレードの本番で演奏する曲目を披露するという趣旨。
私たちは、10年以上演奏し続けているYMCAを披露しました。鳴りやまない拍手と声援に涙が止まりませんでした。
In the afternoon, we had another study session. Everyone worked on their own study plans.
At 7 p.m., a preview concert was held with students from a local middle school, Grants Pass High School, and our Keisei High School band. We warmed up in the school courtyard and enjoyed pizza kindly provided by the parent association.
This event was planned by Mr. Lewis, who wanted to strengthen bonds among local students—and kindly included us from Japan. We are truly grateful.
Each school performed songs they will play at the Boatnik Parade on May 24.
We played YMCA, a piece we’ve performed for over ten years. The loud applause and cheers brought tears to our eyes.
無事にアメリカでの本番一つ目を終えて、ほっとしました。こんなにも歓迎してもらえるなんて考えもしていませんでした。
緊張や不安が、笑顔に変わった瞬間でした。
本番終了後は、コート内に散り散りになり写真撮影など、言葉が通じない中でも積極的にコミュニケーションをとっていました。すると、スタジアム内には私たちが日ごろの練習で使用している曲と演奏している曲が1曲ずつ流れ始めました。
昨年、熊本に来てくれたグランツパスの生徒の皆さんと本校吹奏楽部生徒はすぐに反応して、踊り始めました。この光景には両校顧問、スタッフ陣の目頭が熱くなりました。
We felt so relieved after finishing our first big performance in the U.S. We never imagined we would be welcomed so warmly.
It was the moment when our nervousness and anxiety turned into smiles.
After the performance, we spread out across the court, taking photos and communicating with each other—even without a common language. Then, two familiar songs began to play in the stadium—one we use for daily practice and one we perform regularly.
The students from Grants Pass who visited Kumamoto last year and our band members instantly recognized the music and started dancing together. It was such a touching scene that it brought tears to the eyes of both schools’ teachers and staff.
